TOFIFEST 2009 - PROGRAMME
The Festival is constructed out of several basic film programme divisions. There will also be special screenings, meetings with filmmakers, discussion panels and concerts. And here is the frame programme of the Festival.
GOLDEN ANGELS - COMPETITIONS
TOFIFEST 2009 is, first of all, Festival competitions with awards, which are Golden Angels. Each year new, premiere and interesting films are submitted to them. The film which characteristics is an insolent attitude to the world that surrounds us. A cinematography that is wise, thinking, and sometimes rebellious. Always worth watching.
• INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION – a competition for the best full-length feature films, carefully selected at big international festivals and among the submissions
• SHORT FEATURE FILMS COMPETITION – a competition for best short feature films. The stake s systematically selected among hundreds of submitted films and pictures taking part in the largest short film events in Europe, like Oberhausen or Clermont-Ferrand
• POLISH COMPETITION – a competition for best Polish full-length feature films made within previous year
NAPRZÓD/FORWARD!
These are Tofifest’s film discoveries – unschematical films, somatimes balancing on the edge of experiment, yet always contributing new phrases to the language of film
POLISH CINEMA WOMAN/WOMEN
in 2009 we will also see a special initiative of Tofifest and National Film Archive, Polish Cinema Woman/Women – due to which we will focus on the films made by Polish female filmmakers. For Tofifest is one of a few big film festivals in Poland with such characteristic female features. Each year Tofifest is visited by great women of the screen, and from the very beginning it has been created by a woman – director: Kafka Jaworska.
• BARBARA SASS – a retrospective devoted to one of most prominent Polish female film directors, whom we owe the greatest performances of Dorota Stalińska and Magdalena Cielecka’s film debut.
• HELENA GROSSÓWNA – a retrospective devoted to one of the greatest stars of pre-WWII Polish cinematography – a native of Toruń Helena Grossówna. The festival will be crowned by the concert of Torunian Symphonic Orchestra which will present songs from the films in which Grossówna took part, and among them such „hits” as „Umówiłem się z nią na 9-tę” or „Ach jak przyjemnie”, and even the famous lullaby „A-a-a, kotki dwa”;
• YOUNG POLISH FEMALE FILM DIRECTORS – a review of short feature films made by the most interesting directors of the young generation, among them Agnieszka Smoczyńska, Anna Kazejak and Norah McGettigan
SWITZERLAND at TOFIFEST
First in Poland review of young Swiss cinematography „Beyond The Chocolate Mountains” ad the retrospective of the Master of Swiss cinema - Alain Tanner will be the hit of the programme of the seventh edition of Tofifest film festival. Swiss cinematography will br the guest of honour of Tofifest, and Toruń will be visited by a strong representation of young filmmakers from Switzerland. The co-organizer of this division is Swiss Films institution.
• BEYOND teh CHCOLATE MOUNTAINS - REVIEW OF YOUNG SWISS CINEMATOGRAPHY: the programme will contain the curatorial selection of films prepared together by Tofifest and Swiss Films – the partner of the programme. The review will cover a wide panorama of contemporary Swiss cinema, among others – new films by Lionel Baier or Ursula Meier.
• RETROSPECTIVE OF ALAIN TANNER’S FILMS: the Master of Swiss cinematography – one of most promonent directors of Swiss motion pictures, the co-founder of Groupe Cinque and foundations of Swiss New Cinema. The retrospective of his films will be accompanied by discussion panel about Tanner’s works, in which European, Swiss and Polish critics will take part. Among persons invited for the discussion there is Marcy Goldber – film historian and assistant to the Master;
HEAD in the FILMS
„Head in the Films” are the best films that were made during the previous year, which we often did not have an opportunity to see in cinema theatres or which merely twinkled on the screens. Now it is time to do the homework and watch them. Among them, where will be as well controversial, not sticking to other pictures from Forward! division, as the most acclaimed films of the season in the division Open Space or Breakfast on the Screen.
• FORUM 08/09 – best films of the 2008 / 2009 season. Valuable and interesting movies, often just twinkling on the screenes of cinema theatres, and that is why it is worth coming back to them, and this way doing the film “homework”
• FILM BROTHERS which means partner festivals, this year the division screens documentaries from Kosovian DOKUFEST from Prizren and Festival de Cine De Pamplona from Spanish town of Pamplona [a town, along with which Toruń struggles for the title of European Capital of Culture 2016]
• OPEN SPACE – open air screenings of excellent films of authorial cinematography and hits of the season.
MASTERS
There is also a place at Tofifest for Masters’ retrospectives: MASTERS present selected figures of cinematography. At our Festival we have already shown profiles of numerous people. Controversial ones, like Theo van Gogh, or great women of the screen, like Marhta Meszaros and Mirjana Karanovic. This year the time will come for another Masters: Barbara Sass [in the division Polish Cinema Woman/Women], Alain Tanner [as part of Swiss films screenings] and Michael Haneke.
• MICHAEL HANEKE – on the 20th anniversary of big screen debut: Tofifest decided to honour the anniversary of Master Haneke’s big screen debut and screen the selection of his most significant films. Beginning with „The Seventh Continent” up to „Hidden”.
TOFIFEST’S OWN DISHES
The Festival will also present two divisions that are Tofifest’s own unique initiatives. Both divisions have already had seven-year-old tradition and resulted in numerous valuable events. They have also brought a big promotion both to the filmmakers from Kujawy and Pomorze region from the division Localizations, as to young and angry, screened in FOCUS divisions.
• FOCUS TOFIFEST – a closer look at selected young Polish filmmakers. It is already the fifth edition of this division which each year focuses on selected, young filmmakers from Poland; In this division, there have already been presented, among others, Marcin Dorociński, Maciej Cuske, Marcin Sauter, Rafał Kapeliński or Anna Jadowska.
• LOCALIZATIONS – focus on filmmakers from Kujawy and Pomorze region.
PHENOMENA
This is a new division and new direction towards which Tofifest is heading. It will present each year selected phenomena of world cinematography, chosen as well by the genre, and also seen as a work of one director or actor. In 2009 one will see in this division:
• CINEMA CLASSICS – a selected greatest motion pictures in the history of cinematography, among them such pearls as „Citizen Kane” or „Casablanca”, „Annie Hall”, „Some Like it Hot”. The films will be preceded by Tomasz Raczek’s lectures;
• unique REVIEW OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS with the focus on films by SERGIO LEONE – one of the most interesting phenomena born by Italian cinematography in the turning of 1960s. and 1970s. A unique review of films which are now considered to be cult. Italian spaghetti western was developed on the basisi of American genre, becoming a significant stream in Italian cinematography in the 1960s. and 1970s. Italians had created autonomic genre of western, conducting to the situation – in spite that in the beginning the genre was not appreciated by critics – in which nowadays it is considered cult and is an inexhaustible source of numerous paraphrases and film accomodations; The retrospective will consist of review of the films of the master of the genre: Sergio Leone, and less known in Poland, yet recognizeable in Europe and worldwide such directors as Corbucci, Freda, Castellarii, Cicero and others;
CHILDREN’S ZONE
The Festival has prepared everyday film mornings for the youngest viewers. The division of film screenings will be supplemented by film workshops for children, organized togather with „Znaki Czasu” Centre for Contemporary Art.
• BREAKFAST ON THE SCREEN – morning screenings for the youngest cinema lovers. One will have the opportunity to remind the greatest animated fairy tales of recent season.
AROUND TOFIFEST
The film progamme will be supplemented with concerts, exhibitions, workshops and meetings with filmmakers.
