Barcelona, 1913. Alma is perhaps one of the most modern women of her day. Her father, Dr. Mira, is the nation’s foremost neurosurgeon. Her husband, Dr. Leon Pardo, also practices medicine as a psychiatrist. This summer, he visited Vienna and became a follower of the revolutionary Dr. Sigmund Freud and his advanced theories about hysteria and sexuality. Alma comes home and findsher husband in tears, about to disappear from her life and everyone else’s. Giving no more explanation than a few incoherent mumbles, Leon runs off, leaving Alma alone and about to give birth. Salvador is Alma’s brother-in-law is deeply in love with Alma. That is why he cannot refuse when Alma asks him to help her find her missing husband. The only clue they have is a manuscript about hysteria and female sexuality based on four patients. Following those signs, Alma and Salvador start a Sherlock Holmes kind of adventure, where hypnosis, love, danger, and every imaginable taboo are all intertwined.

Introspective artist Blake is buckling under the weight of fame, professional obligations and a mounting feeling of isolation. Dwarfed by towering trees, Blake slowly makes his way through dense woods. He scrambles down an embankment to a fresh spring and undresses for a short swim. The next morning he returns to his house, an elegant, if neglected, stone mansion. Many people are looking for Blake--his friends, his managers and record label, even a private detective-but he does not want to be found. In the haze of his final hours, Blake will spend most his time by himself. He avoids the people who are living in his house, who approach him only when they want something, be it money or help with a song. Finally, alone in the greenhouse, Blake will look and listen--and seek release.

America is known to polish audiences mostly through the pictures and events of New York City and Chicago. But there is an America that is completely different and unusual and which doesn’t fit into the general standards. It is this America that would be introduced to the Polish audience in the documentary film: Plonacy Facet ‘Burning Man’. What is Burning Man? It all started 20 years ago when Larry Harvey, upset after the end of his relationship with a girl, decided to burn a two meter tall statue of a man on the beach. He invited a couple of friends to the beach that day. Everybody had a really good time, and they decided to do the same thing the next year. They didn’t even imagine that 20 years later this would be one of the greatest artistic events in the USA, attracting more than 35 thousand people, not to the beach anymore, but to the bottom of a dried-up lake in Nevada’s desert.

Another Tony Gatlif’s movie in which the protagonists are accompanied by a traditional music. Film is a story of an Italian girl Zingerina of a great temper, who comes to Transylvania with her friend to find love of her life... Not everything will go fine but instead she will gain the friendship of a little Romanian beggar, passionate and true feeling of rash Tchangalo and a deep motherly love.
Tony Gatlif, a Gipsy leader of French cinema, comes back to Romania with this film and he discovers the country for anew. Here he made his biggest hit up to date – Gadjo Dilo. Gatlif for the first time makes a woman character as a main protagonist and builds a road movie around her. This is a world full of hot-blooded lovers, Romanian amateurs in episodic roles and music, which became this director’s specia.

CONVERSATIONS on a SUNDAY AFTERNOON
PREMIERA POLSKA/ POLISH PREMIERE
RSA 2006, 79 min; reżyseria/director: Khalo Matabane zdjecia/photography: Matthys Mocke; editor/montaż: Audrey Maurion; muzyka/music, Carlo Mombelli; dźwięk/sound: Lenny Nyozi; obsada/cast: Fatima Hersi, Tony Kgoroge; produced by/produkcja: Desiree Daniels, Aspasia Karras, Khalo Matabane
Awards-festivals/nagrody-festiwale: Toronto Film Festival 2005; Berlin Film Festival 2005 - Prize of the Ecumenical Jury/ nagroda jury ekumenicznego
A fascinating contribution to the rich global trend of blending documentary and fiction, film begins with one man's curiosity about a lonely woman in a Johannesburg park and expands its scope to include a look at exiles living in South Africa. Matabane cleverly uses his central character as a device to introduce him to several people with stories about how and why they ended up in Africa's thriving but crime-ridden southern tip. This creative contribution to South African film will draw strong interest from fests and serious-minded pub TV networks, especially in Europe. Woozy and unstable Keniloe, looking a bit hostile, voraciously reads Nuruddin Farah's Somalian novel "Links" on a park bench in Johannesburg one Sunday afternoon. Scene proves to be a mood-setter as Keniloe finds Fatima, a lonely, lovely Somalian woman in the park, as if one of Farah's characters had come to life.
He has directed a number of films about South African issues, including the shorts Poetic Conversations (1996) and Love in a Time of Sickness (2001) and the documentaries Two Decades Still (96), The Waiters (97), Young Lions (99) and Story of a Beautiful Country (04). Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon (05) is his first feature film.
SLAUGHTERY NR 1
Poland 2006, 75 min.; reżyseria i scenariusz/direktor and screenplay: Dominik Matwiejczyk; zdjęcia/photography: Sławomir Panasiewicz; music/muzyka: Radek Fijołek, Adam Fijołek, Bogumił Misala, Andrzej Koper; sound/dźwięk: Marek Lipiński; montaż/editor: Dariusz Szermanowicz; producent/producer: Dariusz Szermanowicz, Rafał Szermanowicz, Dominik Matwiejczyk; produkcja/production: Grupa 13, ParadoxFilm; Obsada/cast: Krzysztof Zych, Magdalena Kielar, Łukasz Garlicki, Aleksandra Kisio, Wojciech Mecwaldowski, Olga Frycz, Krzysztof Boczkowski, Andrzej Gałła, Regina Grudzień, Radek Fijołek
Dominik Matwiejczyk is considered as a prodigy child of Polish cinema. A self-taught man from small village near Wrocław. His cinema is an acute analysis of everyday life of young Poles from large, anonymous block quarters and villages forgotten by everyone. Dominik’s mastership, though, is in the ability of talking difficult matters with warm, humoristic distance. He says that he would very much want to make a movie with Natalie Portman playing the main part. Dominik was awarded twice with Golden Angel - TOFFI’s Grand Prix. In 2004 for the film „Krew z nosa”, and in 2005 for „Ugór”.
SOBOWTÓR
Poland 2005, 66 min.; reżyseria i scenariusz: Bodo Kox; zdjęcia/photography: Jacek Chamot; muzyka/music: Tomasz Gwinciński; dźwięk/sound: Łukasz Lipiński; montaż/editor: Bodo Kox; Producent: Bodo Kox, Magdalena Woźniak; Obsada/cast: Marcin Chabowski, Magdalena Woźniak, Bodo Kox, Joanna Szczepkowska, Dawid Antkowiak, Daria Kapralska, Leszek Rosołek
Bodo Kox is the greatest scandalist of Polish independent cinema. First, he succeeded on international festivals as an actor in Dominik Matwiejczyk’s films. Later on he directed himself the best independent short film of the year 2005 – „Marco P. i złodzieje rowerów”. He feels well playing both gay men [„Homo father”, P. Matwiejczyk, 2005] and country boys [„Ugór”, D. Matwiejczyk, 2006]. He would like to direct a film with Vincent Gallo and Johnny Depp as main characters.
