MARCIN DOROCIŃSKI, actor
He was born in 1973 in Milanówek near Warsaw.
He is one of the most interesying figures Polish young scene of cinema and television. Film and theatre actor, bound with Waraw from the beginning. He graduated from Theatre Academy in 1997. Since then he’s been working in Teatr Dramatyczny.
His debut in front of the box was in 1996 as a student in the second part of the series "Dom". Later on he went to small roles in Andrzej Żuławski’s „Szamanka”, Juliusz Machulski’s "Kiler-ów 2-óch" and "Ekstradycja 3" TV-series. He got his first leading role in 1999. In "Krugerandy" by Wojciech Nowak he played a 20-year-old man, who so much wants to abandon the small town’s hopelessness, that he steals the title’s coins, and this ends badly for him and his friends.
He acted in numerous TV-series, among others in "Miasteczko", "Marzenia do spełnienia", "Kocham Klarę", "Sfora" and "Defekt", and in Janusz Morgenstern’s feature "Żółty szalik". In Filip Bajon’s "Przedwiośnie" he played Lulek Antoni, and in Wiktor Grodecki’s "Nienasycenie" - general Niehyd-Ochluj.
In 2003 Maciej Ślesicki hired him for the role of Roman, a reality show contestant in the film "Show". One of Dorociński’s most interesting roles is the one in Juliusz Machulski’s comedy "Vinci". He plaed there a police commisioner, which character became his trademark in many roles. He also starred in the film created by present organizers of TOFIFEST – the Jaworski brothers. In a first Polish comedy aabout Teutonic knights "1409. Aferze na zamku Bartenstein" (directed by Rafał Buks) he played Wiedźmin.
But the acknowledgement came with the role of undercommissioner Sławomir "Despero"Desperski in Patryk Vega’s "PitBull" [Vega was member of TOFIFEST’2006 Jury]. His character becomes a device in the hands of a criminal eho tends to eliminate his enemy from the criminal world – wrote Onet.pl. Dorociński was awarded for this role with Zbyszek Cybulski Award [Cybulski was celled „Polish James Dean”]. He appeared on the screen many times, among others asi Mateusz in a comedy "Francuski numer" which was directed by Bydgoszczan Robert Wichrowski (alongside with Karolina Gruszka, Robert Więckiewicz, Jan Frycz and Maciej Stuhr). One of his recent roles is the one in wartime "Tajemnica twierdzy szyfrów" by Adek Drabiński.
Dorociński takes every possible opportunity to participate in independent film – he took part in Piotra Matwiejczyk’s films "Wstyd" and „Na Boso”, and in “Nie panikuj” by Bodo Kox – both directors are independent filmmakers and were the first edition of FOCUS TOFIFEST guests in 2005.
Dorociński is also appreciated theatre actor – he worked for such well-known directors (who were TOFIFEST’s guests) as Krystyna Janda and Krzysztof Zanussi.
Dorociński, in spite of tens of roles he’s had already played, is still a not fully discovered pearl. His great acting talent is still waiting for great leading role. We recommend the careful watch of his career to all cinema lovers.

RAFAŁ KAPELIŃSKI, director
Torunian by birth, Londoner by accommodation. Now back in Poland. He is one of the greatest discoveries of young cinema in the last year. His film „Emilka płacze” with force entered the „high life”. The film won The Short Feature Film Competition TOFIFEST’2006 and the Competition of Independent Cinema at Polish Feature Films Festival in Gdynia [2006]. Due to the award at TOFIFEST, it went to distribution in Poland by befriended Vivarto company. Vivarto is also introducing to the cinemas Kapeliński’s latest film – „Ballada o Piotrowskim” with the excellent role of Krzysztof Kiersznowski.
Kapeliński’s fascination in ciname started in Toruń, a town of TOFIFEST. „The very first thought about binding myself with the cinema, ignited in me when at the age of five I saw the comedy with Charlie Chaplin”. In future he also intends to make a film which will not only describe the beauty of Toruń, but also the town’s unique atmosphere.
Graduated from English Filology Department at Nicolai Copernici University in Toruń (1994), Management and Media Administration Department (MBA) at Washington University in Seattle and London Film School in London. From 1993 to 1994 he was the director of Festival Office of Interantional Film Festival of the art of Cinamatography Camerimage in Toruń. In 1994 he set up a publishing house “Chamberlin & Kapeliński”. Later he worked as a media’s analyst for investment banks in Zurich, New York and London. He realized nine short, fiction and documental films.
TOFIFEST Director Kafka Jaworska invited Kapeliński to FOCUS because of his unique talent. This yet young director makes an excellent work with the camera, he constucts the film’s matter. „Emilka…” blows with the amount of emotions and feelings, and in the same time is, at first look, a very calm black-and-white film set in probably the saddest and most dark time of contemporary history of Poland. This is how he explains setting „Emilka” in the realities of the military coup [1981]: „Poland of the 1980s. in some way was for me a beautiful world, and so fascinating, that it kept coming back to me, needing to tell it by the film. Despite all the evil of the military coup, that was the time of hidden innocence for me.”
Kapeliński has his own strict preasumptions according to film and denies any attepmts to put the „Independent” label on him: „I don’t see the difference between independent and commercial cinema. There are just good or bad films. And this is the only thing in which directors and audience shall put their interest. I understand independence in the way that no one interferres in my work and I am the only one responsible for it” – he said in the interview for Gazeta Wyborcza.
Now living in London, Kapeliński wants to describe the largest, since the 19th century, emmigration of Poles who in the number of one million live now in Great Britain.
We recommend the forthcoming Rafał’s films to all the producers, distributors and sponsors – this career is worth attention.

WOJCIECH KASPERSKI, director
A young filmmaker, who only makes excellent works. Each of his alredy completed short films met acknowledgemant and awards. As well documentaries, as feature films.
He was born in Kartuzy near Gdańsk. He graduated from Polish National Film School (Poland), directing faculty. He studied philosophy at Gdansk University. He makes documentary, as well as, feature films. He lives and works in Warsaw. He is currently working on his new film in the UK. He is the winner of “Golden Lajkonik” Award (Cracow, Poland), the First Prize “For the short documentary” (Perm, Russia), Sterling Award (Washington, USA).
Kasperski became a shining star in the last year. For screened at TOFIFEST’06 short film „Nasiona”, made as a part of Russia-Poland. A New Look, it received, among others, the Sterling Award at AFI / DISCOVERY SILVERDOCS Festival in Washington – one of the most important documentary competitions in the world, the Golden Lajkonik for the best polish documentary at Cracow Film Festival, the Big Silver Nanuk for the best Russian documentary at International Documentary Film Festival "Flahertiana" in Perm. “Nasiona” also won 28 Big Muddy Film Festival in USA. Similar awards came for his short feature film “Miasto ucieczki/City of the escape” [TOFIFEST’06 Competition]
„Nasiona” was the first film to bring him international attention. It was made as a part of “Russia-Poland. A New Look” project. It was one of twelve, and the idea was to send Polish young documentalists to Russia and let them describe that world. Kasperski says this on making of „Nasiona”: „I found the characters by accident. We were in Altay mountains. On our way we saw a 9-year-old boy in the garden who was igniting and extinguishing the matches. […] A lady ran for us, she was saying something. She was very tired by life, her face was bruised, her hand broken. […] We talked for a while. I asked if we could come the following day. She invited us for breakfast. We came in the morning and stayed. We began making the film, resigning from our previous project”.
When making documentaries, Kasperski stakes on two things: as little interference as possible, and calm observation. This is a documentalist’s credo for him. He just came back from Syberia, where his latest film was made.
