Little Ofelia arrives at a house that belongs to her mother's new husband, Captain Vidal. The girl finds it hard to accept her stepfather's severity. By accident, Ofelia discovers that there is a hidden labyrinth in the garden. There she meets Pan, a fairytale creature, who recognises the girl as a princess from a magical land that faces total destruction. However, the girl must stand the challenge of three grueling tasks that will test her immortality. As time passes, cruelty starts to overwhelm the real world.
