Witold (Jonathan Genêt) has just failed his exams at the Faculty of Law, while his friend Fuks (Johan Libéreau) resigned from his job for a fashion designer from Paris. Once both friends have arrived to a private boarding house, they start to observe strange phenomena: they see a sparrow hanging from a string in the forest, then they find a stick hanged in the same manner, and finally signs on the ceiling and in the garden. What they also find strange about the boarding house is the lips of personnel ― one of the maids has deformed lips, but there is also a young woman with perfect lips ― Witold falls madly in love with the latter. Unfortunately, the girl has recently married a very respectable architect. But is the woman worthy of similar respect? The third object to be hanged from a string is a cat, but this time it is Witold’s doing. Why did he do it? But first and foremost: will the fourth object be a hanged man?

The last film by Andrzej Żuławski is a modernised adaptation of the novel Cosmos by Witold Gombrowicz.
