The plot in the film is a structure of multiple narrations happening simultaneously: the life of Marta and a teenager infatuated with her, the film about Marta where its director appears in the flesh, and the real events that happened in the life of Krystyna Janda, who plays Marta. In this film, Andrzej Wajda returns to the theory of Eros and Thanatos, focusing on the different faces of death as the inherent aspect of human fate. This is an absolutely unique film experience that combines adaptations of short stories written by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and Sándor Márai, and a shocking personal narration from Krystyna Janda.
