New Zealand, mid-19th Century. Ada McGrath, a mute Scottish woman, is married to a man she has never seen before. With her daughter and the beloved piano, she travels to meet him. She uses the instrument as the only communication device with the world. Her husband does not care about her wife’s playing skills. The piano is sold to a neighbour – an uncivilised European. Trying to buy the piano back, Ada surprisingly falls in love with the man that she at first despised. In the very centre of the film narrative is a love triangle, silence, and music.
