We are in New England, in 1630s. Farmer William, his wife Katherine, and their five children are banished from Plymouth Colony for their different religious beliefs. They settle by the edge of a dark forest, where they build a house and a barn. When their new-born son disappears in mysterious circumstances and crops fail, the growing fear and sense of guilt make family members turn against each other.
