This is one of the most popular short films directed by Chris Marker, thanks to which he became world famous. Many years later, the film inspired ‘12 Monkeys’ (1995), Terry Gilliam’s grim post-apocalyptic science fiction story. In ‘The Pier,’ we are thrown into an undefined future, where a small group of survivors from a nuclear apocalypse set on a journey through time. They hope to get back to the time when there was still normal life on Earth. The leading theme in the film is love – the emotion one of the main protagonists still remembers obsessively. Even though it is locked in the past, it still alive.

Chris Marker

A writer, photographer, film director, documentarist and multimedia artist from France. His international fame came with the short film La Jetée / The Pier (1962) – the film considered to be source from which the film 12 Monkeys (1995) by Terry Gilliam originated. In 1983, Chris Marker made the documentary film ‘Sans soleil / Sunless,’ in which the line between a documentary and pure fiction was very thin – a trademark that permeated his entire film work.
