The year is 2035. The Earth succumbs to a lethal virus, which puts the human kind on the verge of extinction. The survivors hidden deep underground, but dream that they will one day live as before. Promised to have his prison sentence reduced, James Cole, a convicted felon, takes the risk to travel in time. He is sent back to 1996, so he can collect more data about the origin of the virus and prevent the extinction from ever taking place. He is mistakenly sent back to 1990, and ends locked up in a mental asylum. After a series of failed attempts to time travel, Cole finally picks up a trail leading him to the very origin of the epidemics. To accompany him in this mission, he kidnaps psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly. As time passes, Cole manages to convince her that his memories from the future are not symptoms of schizophrenia but records of real events.
