Teenager Cata spends her vacation at her grandparents’ house in Majorca. She swims in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, toys with her younger sister, and flirts with a boy from Sweden. The idyll comes to an abrupt end, when her beloved granny Catalina suddenly dies. The whole family is stricken with grief. One day, Cata decides to wear her grandmother’s dress and feels unexpected attraction to her clothes and belongings. As the borderline between the world of the living and the dead starts to blur, the film slowly transforms into slightly disturbing meditation on memory, grief, and the invisible forces that keep shaping our lives.

Lucía Aleñar Iglesias

A film director from Spain. She has lived and worked in the United States for nearly ten years. The film ‘Forastera’ was screened at the 59th edition of Critics’ Week in Cannes. It became a channel for the film director to reconnect with her homeland, turning it into a melancholic fantasy where family heritage is defined as a spiritual possession – very much like the clothing that we wear and which, in turn, wears us.
