A true love can happen to us when we have long stopped expecting it. Allie and Jo knew they were meant for one another since the day they first met. Their relationship gives them strength they have never felt before. Jo, a transgender man, is a well know figure among the start-up scene in New York – he is a mentor, speaker, and activist. Allie, his partner, a transgender woman, works as a biology lecturer. Her students adore her. They were both raised in very pious communities and it took them many long years to find the language that would define their identity. Their paths crossed when they were already adults, and since then they started to build a family, going through the process of gender transition together. In the film, we follow the preparations for their wedding ceremony, and their everyday life in Sunnyside, Queens. We observe how they live as a family, their challenges at work, and the process of finding their place in the new social roles. And with all the pieces finally falling into place, Jo receives a devastating diagnosis: cancer. The couple must now faces the questions they were not prepared to answer. The film ‘My Sunnyside’ is an emotional documentary about love, identity, and a family – one that follows its own rules, and is yet surprisingly similar to the traditional one.
