Carlo and Elisa have been together for many years, and on the surface their relationship seems to be stable and fulfilled. He is a philosophy professor and writer facing a creative crisis. She is a world class journalist who writes for international magazines. Their everyday routine masks a distance that keeps building, slowly filling their relationship with well-trained habits and tensions they fail to address. Looking for a way to reconnect with one another, the couple decides to travel to Morocco with their friends Anna and Paolo, and their teenage daughter Vittoria. It soon becomes clear that Anna and Paolo have their own problems, and all of them find the inner tensions harder and harder to control. Failing to find a common ground with her parents, Vittoria builds a special bond with Carl, leading to a series of unexpected and disturbing events. Using Tangier bathed in sunlight as a background, Muccino weaves a multi-layered story about secrets, lies, and well-hidden emotions. This is a tale about desires that can no longer be tamed and about relations constructed with the things we cannot or do not want to put in words. The film is inspired by the novel ‘Siracusa’ penned by Delia Ephron, who also helped write the script for the film.
