“Thelma & Louise” are back. The rebellion of women is the leading topic of the 14th edition of the Tofifest International Film Festival

We have recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of “Thelma & Louise” by Ridley Scott. It is the film that has become a manifesto of freedom for so many women. And not only women, to tell you the truth. During its 14th edition, the “rebellious” Tofifest is going to ask a question about the current relevance of the film and what is left of the rebellion that emerged 25 years ago.

The film by Ridley Scott was a surprise to many people, since the roles of rebels fighting for their ideals were reserved for men only, until then. The final form of the film was under a great influence of a script written by Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar for it, and the film itself has become a manifesto of freedom for many women.

To me, the film is a manifesto of a much more universal nature, says Kafka Jaworska, director of the festival, because “Thelma & Louise” is a manifesto of people’s freedom. And this is exactly the name of the Phenomena section this year, which is also the leading topic behind the 14th edition of our festival.

It is always difficult to discuss the issue of fighting for people’s freedom and dignity. Today, it is particularly easy to lead a discussion about virtually anything to the intricacies of politics. But that is not how we deal with things. Instead, we understand that cinema exists to stir up emotions. And sometimes it brings people together, and sometimes it separates them, adds Kafka.

For many years, Tofifest has been consistent in proving that cinema exists not only for the purpose of shaping artistic sensitivity (which is, of course, important), but also to initiate discussions about topics that are important to people. And that is exactly the mission of Tofifest — “a rebellious festival”.

As part of the 14th edition of Tofifest, there will be a special screening of “Thelma & Louise” in a digitally remastered version.

After the film, feel free to join a debate under the title “Thelma & Louise as a manifesto of people’s freedom”, along guests representing the hottest names from “both sides” of the pro-/anti-feminist groups and freedom movements. You are all very much welcome to be part of that discussion.

Tofifest has never been afraid to talk about difficult subjects. We had an open and fiery discussion about the war in Ukraine, the Islamic threat, and this time we are not going easy again. You can also talk to use in the Internet, through social media (Facebook, Twitter), and also post pictures on Instagram.

The 14th edition of the Tofifest IFF will take place from 15th to 23rd October, in Torun. Come and join us!
