The main protagonist in the film is a woman (Vasilina Makovceva) with a very calm face that immediately catches your eye. One day, she receives back all the letters she had sent to her imprisoned husband. She wants to clarify the situation and find out more about the fate that befell the man, but each piece of information she asks about turns out to be “state secret”. Eventually, she decides to go visit her husband on her own. The film has been made in the spirit of masterpieces of Russian cinema, and the director takes her protagonist on a journey through successive “circles of hell” in Russia, which is portrayed as a country corrupted on every possible level, both institutionally and morally.
