This dreamy story, in which the Italian neorealism and magic realism meet, focuses on the encounter between Lazzaro, a boy so good-natured that many often consider him a loony, and pretentious aesthete Tancredi, a young nobleman with boundless imagination. They live in Inviolata, an isolated village inhabited by shepherds, where life is controlled by the horrible marquise Alfonsina de Luna, who is both queen of a tobacco empire and mother of Tancredi. The loyalty-based bond between the two men is sealed, when Tancredi asks Lazzaro to help him organise his own abduction...
