17 hottest films from Poland qualified for the From Poland competition

Great masters of cinema and talented novices, intimate dramas and epic films spanning long periods of time, winners of prestigious film festivals, and ferreted out discoveries – this is the From Poland competition of the 16th edition of Tofifest, in a nutshell.

Since Polish cinema is in great shape, it is no wonder that as many as 17 films will compete against each other. In addition, the majority of their authors will have their meeting sessions with the audience. We will certainly not fail in showing the films that everybody has been awaiting for years, for example “7 Emotions” by Marek Koterski, which marks the first film by this director after seven years of silence. His latest film will compete with other recognised film classics: Krzysztof Zanussi, who will take us back to the 19th century with his “Ether”; Janusz Kondratiuk (the author of “Hydrozagadka”) and his “A Cat with a Dog”, in which he portrayed a difficult relationship with his brother Andrew; Filip Bajon and “The Butler”, in which we take a closer look at the story of the region of Masuria, spanning a period from 1900 to 1945; Jan Jakub Kolski and his “Pardon”, a story about a family; or Pawel Pawlikowski, who has conquered Cannes with his “Cold War” and won an award for directing.

There is also a number of young film directors featured in the competition, whose films have already managed to win the hearts of audiences: “A Coach’s Daughter” by Lukasz Grzegorzek, featuring Jacek Braciak in the role of his lifetime, “Call Me Tony” by Klaudiusz Chrostowski, “The Village of Swimming Cows” by Katarzyna Trzaska, or “Nina” by Olga Chajdas.

We are also going to see the winner of the Golden Lions award at the Gdynia Film Festival, i.e. “Silent Night” by Piotr Domalewski, “Tower. A Bright Day” by Jagoda Szelc, which won an award at the same festival, “Via Carpatia” by Klara Kochanska and Kasper Bajon - the film was screened at Karlovy Vary IFF, as well as “53 Wars” by Ewa Bukowska, “Zhalanash - Empty Shore” by Marcin Sauter, which won an award at the Krakow Film Festival, “Face” by Malgorzata Szumowska, which brought her the Silver Bear at Berlinale, or “Over the Limit” by Marta Prus, which was showered with awards at the Krakow Film Festival.

It is now a tradition that the audience will watch many of the films featured in the competition before their official cinema premières.
