We’re starting the countdown to the 18th edition of the Tofifest IFF and present to you this year’s phenomenon, Leeloo, who is both one of the least obvious superheroes of international cinema and at the same the title fifth element.
In 2020, when we need knowledge, experience, and perseverance rather than power, authority, and thick muscles to fight an invisible enemy, we should pay particular attention to individuals possessing superpowers, such as Leeloo, who was the main protagonist in the absolutely unique and unforgettable space opera The Fifth Element directed by Luc Besson.
In the film, Leeloo is a force bonding the four natural elements, i.e. earth, fire, water, and air, thanks to which she manages to triumph over a malevolent cosmic entity threatening the existence of Earth. This year, she will become our guide through the nine days of the festival.
Cinema is saturated with superheroes, who one by one join an endless line. However, we wish to break away from that line and refuse to be part of ready-made identical idols, and instead remind you of Leeloo, a rebellious “mender of the world”. She is a heroine like none other, since she is an imaginary fifth element sent to heal the world. This year, we are celebrating a symbolic 18th anniversary. And who else should accompany us into maturity, if not one of the least obvious female characters in the history of cinema?, comments Kafka Jaworska, director of the Tofifest IFF. Kujawy Pomorze Region.
This year’s edition of the Festival will be held from 17th October to 25th October, naturally in Torun. It will have a hybrid nature, combining both stationary and on-line film screenings. Rest assured that one thing remains unchanged: the Tofifest International Film Festival will be a great feast for all cinema enthusiasts, both those coming to visit Torun in October and those sitting in front of their screens at home. Just as it is every single year.
We shall go and face the challenges and try to fix the world, under the wing of Leeloo. What can bring us all together better than good cinema?
