Iceland and Portugal at Tofifest. In other words, it will be both cold and hot.

Iceland and Portugal have their own special places at this year's Tofifest. There will be a separate section -- Small country, big cinema -- dedicated to Scandinavians, and two retrospectives dedicated to filmmakers from the south of Europe. The first of the retrospectives is dedicated exclusively to the Nestor of international cinema Manoel di Oliveira, and the second to Pedro Costa, who is the most important film director from Portugal.

The 13th edition of Tofifest is full of unique film premières coming from nearly all continents, and yet we have decided to make cinema from Iceland and Portugal stand out among all others.

The audience will have an opportunity to taste the unique Scandinavian black humour, thanks to the section called Small country, big cinema, which is dedicated to Icelandic cinema, in its entirety. The section will feature films by Ágúst Guðmundsson, Dagur Kári (winner of the Golden Angel of Tofifest award), and Baltasar Kormákur, one of the most outstanding filmmakers from Iceland. Polish film enthusiasts will also have a chance to see a film by Benedikt Erlingsson, titled Of Horses And Men, which discusses the relationship between people and animals, strongly connected with the reality of life in Iceland.

And that is not all there is to see from Iceland. TOFIFEST will also present a short film Chum by Jörundur Ragnarsson, as part of the SHORTCUT competition, and Rams by Grímur Hákonarson, which is included in the ON AIR main competition. Both films will have their Polish premières at Tofifest.

Portugal will be represented by two important filmmakers. As part of the Masters series, there will be a retrospective of films by Manoel de Oliveira, one of the most original film authors in the world, who remained an active film director for the longest period of time in history, not inly in Portugal, but all around the world. During the festival, we will have a chance to see some of the most interesting film productions of the director, such as the film equivalent of the 19th century novel by Flaubert, Abraham Valley, or a satire created in the form of an opera, The Cannibals. In 2008, Manoel de Oliveira was awarded the Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement, at the Cannes Film Festival. He died in April 2015.

The Forward retrospective is dedicated to Pedro Costa, one of the most important modern film directors from Portugal, who is referred to as"the Samuel Beckett of international cinema". His films go beyond the boundaries of cinema, as his protagonists are portrayed with intimacy, and thanks to using precise editing cuts and his will to take risks, all of which often baffle the audience. 'We film at the edges and we stay at the edges,' said Costa commenting on the reception of his films. The festival in Torun will present, among others, his trilogy Fontainhas and the latest of his films Horse money
