Two brothers live in a village that is slowly falling into ruin and deprivation. The only thing that remains of a once large and wealthy family farm is a house that both of them share with a gravely ill and aged mother. The old lady has not left her house in a long time, which prevents her from realising that her sons have been selling their possessions: land, livestock, and machines, piece by piece, forced to do so by the hopeless financial situation. They hide the fact for fear that the truth would be too much to bear for their old mother.
