Joe Taylor finds a job on a river barge that travels between Glasgow and Edinburgh. One day, he, the owner of the barge, and his wife, see the body of a young woman floating on the surface of water. Was it murder? Or rather an ill-fated incident? It turns out that Joe used to know the girl but keep the fact to himself, particularly because the police are going to investigate the case. The barge seems a perfect place to lay low, but the confined space makes the atmosphere grow tense...
